This bill amends the Correction Law to increase the membership of the State Commission of Correction from 3 to 9 members. The bill specifies that the members must include at least one formerly incarcerated person, a public health professional, a behavioral healthcare professional, an attorney with a background in indigent criminal defense or prisoner's rights litigation, and a professional in another field deemed useful for the correctional system. The members will serve staggered 5-year terms and the appointing authorities can remove members for cause.
