AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring public elementary schools and high schools to provide instruction in Asian American history and civic impact

This bill requires the commissioner to establish curriculum or instructions for public elementary and high schools to provide instruction in Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander history and civic impact. The curriculum must cover the history of diaspora, movements and policies that impacted these communities, their contributions to the development of the United States, the historical events and structures that have limited or harmed these and other historically marginalized communities, as well as the solidarity between these communities and the civil rights movement. Schools can incorporate these materials into their history or social studies curriculum in an appropriate manner. The bill will take effect on the first of July next succeeding the date it becomes law.
