This bill amends existing New Jersey law to impose conditions on drivers approaching disabled vehicles. The key provisions are: 1. Drivers approaching a stationary authorized emergency vehicle, tow truck, highway maintenance or emergency service vehicle, or sanitation vehicle displaying emergency lights must either make a lane change away from the vehicle if possible or reduce their speed to below the posted limit and be prepared to stop. 2. The bill adds a new requirement for drivers approaching a disabled vehicle flashing hazard warning signals or using road flares/reflective triangles to also either make a lane change or reduce speed and be prepared to stop. 3. Violations of these provisions can result in fines of $100-$500, and repeat offenders within 12 months may also receive motor vehicle penalty points. 4. The bill also requires the state to establish a public awareness campaign to inform drivers about the importance of complying with these requirements and the associated risks and penalties.
