This bill, the Maritime Architecture and Response to International Terrorism In the Middle East Act of 2023 (MARITIME Act of 2023), requires the Secretary of Defense to develop, in cooperation with allies and partners in the Middle East, an integrated maritime domain awareness and interdiction capability. The goal is to protect the people, infrastructure, and territory of ally and partner countries in the Middle East from threats such as manned and unmanned naval systems, undersea warfare capabilities, and anti-ship missiles of Iran and affiliated groups, as well as from violent extremist organizations, criminal networks, and piracy activities that threaten lawful commerce in the region. The bill outlines a strategy that includes assessing threats, describing existing multilateral maritime partnerships, and identifying elements of the architecture that may be acquired and operated by ally and partner countries versus those that can only be provided and operated by the U.S. Armed Forces. The bill also requires a feasibility study on establishing a fund for this capability and protects sensitive information related to the activities carried out under the bill.
