Bill Summary

This bill prohibits county clerks, sheriffs, and surrogates from serving as a chairperson, co-chairperson, and vice-chairperson, or its functional equivalent, of a county committee of a political party. The prohibition against serving as a chairperson, co-chairperson, or vice-chairperson, or its functional equivalent, of a county committee of a political party shall require a county clerk, sheriff, or surrogate, if any, serving in such a position on the effective date of this bill to resign within 120 days after the effective date of this bill, unless the expiration of the term for that position as that term was specified when the county clerk, sheriff, or surrogate commenced serving in that position is sooner.

AI Summary

This bill prohibits county clerks, sheriffs, and surrogates from serving as chairperson, co-chairperson, or vice-chairperson (or their functional equivalent) of a county political party committee. The bill aims to preserve the integrity of the election process and the impartiality of those involved in elections, the judiciary, and courthouse security. It requires any county clerk, sheriff, or surrogate serving in such a party leadership position to resign within 120 days of the bill's effective date, unless their term for that position expires sooner. The bill does not bar these officials from serving as members of the county party committee, but limits their ability to hold leadership positions that could grant them significant power, control, and influence over election-related processes.
