Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the retirement and social security law, in relation to establishing a retirement service credit for volunteer fire or emergency service

AI Summary

This bill establishes a retirement service credit for volunteer fire or emergency service in New York State. The key provisions are: 1. Members of New York State public retirement systems can obtain one year of service credit for every five years of volunteer fire or emergency service, up to a maximum of three years of service credit. 2. To be eligible, members must have at least five years of credited service, not including the volunteer service. 3. Members must pay the appropriate retirement system an amount equal to 3% of their compensation earned during the 12 months preceding the application for the volunteer service credit. 4. The state and participating employers will cover the remaining costs for the service credit, other than the member contributions. 5. This service credit can be used in special 20-year or 25-year retirement plans. The bill aims to recognize and provide retirement benefits for individuals who have volunteered their time in fire or emergency service roles in New York State.
