This bill, the Safeguarding American Value-added Exports Act (SAVE Act), amends the Agricultural Trade Act of 1978 to preserve foreign markets for goods using common names. It defines "common name" as a name that is ordinarily or customarily used for an agricultural commodity or food product, including for wine grape varietals and traditional wine terms. The bill requires the Secretary of Agriculture to coordinate with the United States Trade Representative to secure the right of U.S. agricultural producers, processors, and exporters to use these common names in foreign markets through bilateral, plurilateral, or multilateral agreements. The Secretary and the Trade Representative must submit a biennial report to Congress on their efforts and successes in carrying out this requirement.
