This bill proposes to amend the Public Health Service Act to reauthorize a sickle cell disease (SCD) prevention and treatment demonstration program. Specifically, it would: (1) expand the program's focus to include the prevention and treatment of SCD complications, in addition to the treatment of SCD; (2) allow the program to make grants, in addition to contracts and cooperative agreements, to carry out the program's activities; and (3) increase the annual funding authorization for the program from $4.455 million to $8.205 million through fiscal year 2028. The bill also expresses a sense of Congress that further research should be undertaken to expand the understanding of the causes of, and to find cures for, heritable blood disorders, including SCD.
