This bill amends the Public School Code of 1949 to require the State Board of Education to review and revise the existing state standards for health, safety, and physical education to address student mental health awareness. The Department of Education and the Department of Health will jointly develop or identify a model curriculum and a list of educational materials that school entities and nonpublic schools can use to provide mental health awareness education. Schools must notify students, parents/guardians, athletic staff, and extracurricular advisors twice a year about available mental health services. If a student's participation in a school-sponsored athletic or extracurricular activity is interrupted or they suddenly stop attending, the school's student assistance program must provide the student's parents/guardians with information on mental health services. The bill also requires the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association to revise its coaching education requirements to include student mental health awareness training, which can be credited towards professional education requirements.
