This bill deems Anthony Varvaro, a police officer who died on September 11, 2022 while traveling to work, to have died as the natural and proximate result of an accident sustained in the performance of duty. This allows his beneficiary or beneficiaries to receive accidental death benefits from the New York State and Local Police and Fire Retirement System, which would be a one-time payment of approximately $7.47 million borne by the State of New York. The bill also requires that any amounts already paid as an ordinary death benefit be deducted from the accidental death benefit on an actuarially equivalent basis.
