This bill, the Jobs in the Woods Act, would require the Secretary of Agriculture to establish a competitive grant program to provide funding to eligible entities, such as nonprofit organizations, states, tribal governments, local governments, and higher education institutions, to carry out career pathway training programs in eligible rural areas with populations of 20,000 or fewer. The goal of these programs would be to address forestry workforce development needs, including issues of an aging workforce and youth migration. The grants would be for a period of up to 4 years and range from $500,000 to $2 million, with $10 million authorized to be appropriated for the program each year from fiscal year 2024 through 2028.
