This bill, the Granting Recognition to Accomplished Talented Employees For Unwavering Loyalty Act (GRATEFUL Act), aims to preserve the Government Employee Immigrant Visa program, which has allowed foreign national employees of the U.S. government with at least 15 years of exceptional service to immigrate to the U.S. with their families since 1952. The bill proposes to allocate a dedicated number of visas (up to 3,500 in fiscal year 2024 and up to 3,000 in subsequent years) for these employees and their immediate family members when visas are not immediately available in the corresponding visa category. To offset this, the bill temporarily reduces the number of diversity visas available, but specifies that this reduction cannot exceed the number of visas provided to government employee immigrants. The bill also ensures that the number of visas available for government employee immigrants remains at least 3,000 even if the overall diversity visa program is reduced.
