This bill amends Florida Statute 1003.42 to prohibit instruction and state academic standards from indicating or implying that an enslaved person benefited from slavery or the enslavement experience in any way. The bill requires annual certification from school districts that the requirements for teaching the history of African Americans, including the history of African peoples before slavery, the enslavement experience, abolition, and the history and contributions of Americans of the African diaspora to society, are met. The bill also encourages the State Board of Education to adopt standards and assess these requirements. The bill takes effect on July 1, 2024.
