This bill authorizes the Secretary of Energy to provide financial awards to the first eligible entities (non-federal entities and the Tennessee Valley Authority) that receive an operating license or combined license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for certain advanced nuclear reactors. The awards will cover the total amount of licensing costs assessed and collected by the Commission from the eligible entities. The bill establishes several categories of eligible advanced nuclear reactors, including those that use spent nuclear fuel or depleted uranium as fuel, integrated energy systems that include nuclear energy, and advanced reactors that can flexibly generate electricity or high-temperature process heat. The bill also limits the federal funding for these awards and exempts the Tennessee Valley Authority's power program funds from being counted towards the limitation.
