This bill amends Section 1137 of the Revised School Code in Michigan to create a "Parents' Bill of Rights and Responsibilities." The key provisions of the bill include: (1) allowing parents to fully review and copy curriculum, books, and other educational materials; (2) permitting parents to visit their child's school during school hours and observe instructional activities; (3) prohibiting schools from collecting biometric data from students without parental consent; (4) requiring schools to obtain parental consent for student attendance at certain school activities; (5) requiring schools to provide parents with class syllabi and reading lists, and allow them to access curricular materials without signing non-disclosure agreements; and (6) requiring schools to promptly notify parents of certain safety incidents affecting students. The bill also allows school boards to adopt reasonable policies and guidelines that do not unreasonably prevent the exercise of these parental rights.
