This bill prohibits state-operated hospitals, including state university health care facilities, cancer institutes, and hospitals authorized under the public health law, from suing patients for medical debt. The bill defines "medical debt" as an obligation or alleged obligation of a consumer to pay any amount related to the receipt of health care services, products, or devices provided by a licensed hospital, authorized health care professional, or certified ambulance service. The bill takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
