This bill establishes an Organized Retail Theft Prosecution Unit within the Department of Law and Public Safety in New Jersey. The unit will be responsible for investigating and prosecuting cases of retail theft, which includes shoplifting, leading an organized retail theft enterprise, and other theft of merchandise. The unit will also assist county prosecutors with the investigation and prosecution of retail theft crimes. The bill requires county prosecutors to notify the Organized Retail Theft Prosecution Coordinator if there is probable cause that a defendant has committed multiple acts of retail theft in the state or across state lines, or if the defendant has prior convictions for retail theft. The Organized Retail Theft Prosecution Coordinator is required to annually report on the activities of the unit, including the number of charges, prosecutions, and convictions, as well as any recommendations for legislative changes to reduce retail theft in New Jersey.
