This joint resolution designates the month of August each year as "Professional Engineers Month" in New Jersey and first Wednesday in August of each year as "Professional Engineering Day." The licensing of professional engineers in the United States began in August 1907 to ensure that the engineering profession is practiced by qualified and ethically accountable professionals. Professional engineers are dedicated to applying scientific knowledge, mathematics, and ingenuity to develop solutions for technical, societal, and commercial problems while holding the public health, safety, and welfare paramount. Nearly 10,000 professional engineers in New Jersey contribute significantly to the technological growth and economic well-being of the State through their work in manufacturing, engineering services, scientific research and development, construction, education, government, industry, and private practice. The designated month and day will reflect that professional engineers should be recognized for their many achievements on behalf of the industries, commerce, and the people of New Jersey, and their commitment to protect the health, welfare, and safety of the public above all other considerations. The designated month and day will also highlight that the engineering profession offers a unique and publicly oriented vocation for young people in the State to be educated and trained to continue the work, innovation, and accomplishments of their predecessors in improving the health, welfare, and safety of the public. The joint resolution also respectfully requests the Governor to issue an annual proclamation calling upon the citizens of the State to participate fittingly in the observance of "Professional Engineers Month" and "Professional Engineering Day."
