This bill proposes to require all school districts, vocational districts, charter schools, approved private day or residential schools, and collaborative schools in Massachusetts to provide and maintain at least one portable airway clearance device on-site at each school facility where instruction is provided. The bill also requires school nurses and cafeteria staff to be trained in the use of these devices, which are medical devices that use suction to remove blockages from the airway during a choking emergency. The bill provides for a hardship waiver process and requires the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Public Health to establish regulations and guidelines for the implementation, training, support, and supervision of this new requirement.
