This bill, the Fire Island AIDS Memorial Act, authorizes the Pines Foundation to establish a memorial at the Fire Island National Seashore to honor the residents of Fire Island, New York, who died of AIDS. The purposes of the act are to remember those who suffered and died from the AIDS epidemic and to educate future generations about the impact of the epidemic on the Fire Island communities. The bill prohibits the use of federal funds for the design, procurement, preparation, installation, or maintenance of the memorial, but allows the Director of the National Park Service to accept and expend non-federal contributions for these purposes. The Director may also allow the memorial to be established in a specific location within the Fire Island National Seashore, and the final design of the memorial is subject to the Director's approval.
