This bill adds restrictions for engaging in wake surfing on public bodies of water. Specifically, it prohibits wake surfing on bodies of water less than 50 acres in size, within 200 feet of a shoreline or other boats, or on portions of water less than 400 feet wide. It also requires the motorboat's propulsion system to be designed by the manufacturer for wake surfing. Additionally, the bill directs the Department of Safety to promote best practices in wake surfing through boater safety education, including educating operators to direct surf waves away from shorelines. The new provisions will take effect on January 1, 2025.
