Bill Summary
Relative to essential services in hospitals. Public Health.
AI Summary
This bill amends Chapter 111 of the General Laws to require hospitals to inform the Department of Public Health 90 days prior to the proposed closing of the hospital or the proposed discontinuance of any "essential health service" provided therein. The Department is required to define "essential health service" by regulation and to conduct a public hearing if a hospital proposes to discontinue such a service. If the Department determines that the discontinued service is necessary for preserving access and health status in the hospital's service area, the essential health service cannot be proposed for closure for three years.
