This bill creates new sections in the Kentucky Revised Statutes (KRS) Chapter 237 to address firearm storage and reporting of lost or stolen firearms and ammunition. Specifically, the bill defines a "safe storage depository" as a secure container that can only be accessed with a key, combination, or other unlocking mechanism, and requires firearm owners or custodians to store firearms in such a depository or render them incapable of being fired when not in their immediate possession or control. Failure to comply with this requirement would result in a Class A misdemeanor. Additionally, the bill requires owners or lawful possessors of firearms, as well as any person who sells ammunition, to report the loss or theft of firearms or ammunition to law enforcement within 24 hours of discovery. The reported information would be entered into the National Crime Information Center database. Failure to report a loss or theft as required would also be a Class A misdemeanor.
