This bill, known as the "Respect People's Abortion Decisions Act," repeals and replaces the current definition of "abortion" in Missouri's law. The new definition states that "abortion" means any medical treatment intended to induce the termination of a pregnancy, except for the purpose of producing a live birth. The bill also clarifies that the state must protect a person's right to terminate a pregnancy prior to fetal viability or if necessary to protect the person's life or health, as determined by a licensed physician. Additionally, the bill states that no prosecution or proceeding shall be brought or maintained under state criminal law for acts authorized or permitted under this section, and the provisions of the bill are severable.
