This bill amends the New York Judiciary Law to provide an optional excuse from jury service for persons aged 70 and over. Under the new provision, individuals aged 70 or older can request an excusal from the whole of the time of jury service without needing to show mental or physical incapacity, undue hardship, or extreme inconvenience. The application for this age-based excusal can be submitted to the commissioner of jurors by mail, fax, email, or in person. The existing law, which requires the commissioner or court to consider factors like mental/physical condition or undue hardship in determining excusal, still applies except for this new age-based exemption.
