This bill amends the existing law on theft of property in Alabama to include the theft of mail as a form of property theft. Specifically, it adds a new provision that makes it a crime to "knowingly obtain or exert unauthorized control over any item mailed or shipped to another person, with intent to deprive the intended recipient of his or her property." The bill also provides that this new crime definition is exempt from certain constitutional requirements regarding the expenditure of local funds, and sets the effective date of the act as October 1, 2024.
