This bill amends the current law on controlled substances to permit a person to be in possession of less than one ounce of psilocybin, a psychedelic compound. It also allows psilocybin to be securely cultivated within a person's residence for personal use. Contingent on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rescheduling and expanding its access program for psilocybin, the bill mandates the Rhode Island Department of Health to establish rules and regulations on the cultivation, distribution, and medical prescription of psilocybin. The bill will take effect on July 1, 2024, and will sunset on July 1, 2026.
