This bill requires school districts in New Jersey to create policies that allow students to use sunscreen and wear sun-protective clothing, like hats and sunglasses, when they are outside at school or at school-sponsored events. Sunscreen is defined as a topical product approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to protect skin from sun damage. Importantly, these policies cannot demand a doctor's note for a student to use sunscreen or protective clothing, though schools may require written permission from a parent or guardian for a student to carry or apply sunscreen themselves, and school staff are not obligated to help students apply it. This law will take effect at the beginning of the school year after it is officially enacted.
