Bill Summary

This bill provides that credit card and debit card account numbers must be truncated on sales receipts, including copies retained by merchants. Under current law, a retail sales establishment may not electronically print more than the last five digits of a customer's credit card account number or the expiration date of that credit card upon any sales receipt provided at the point of sale to the customer. An exception is made for sales receipts in which the sole means of recording the customer's credit card number is by handwriting or by an imprint or copy of the credit card. This bill extends the prohibition against printing the whole account number or expiration date on sales receipts to include debit card information. The bill also specifies that the prohibition applies to copies of sales receipts retained by the retail sales establishment, in addition to those physically provided to the customer. The bill sets forth a civil penalty of up to $1,000 for violations.

AI Summary

This bill requires that credit card and debit card account numbers, along with their expiration dates, must be truncated on sales receipts, meaning only the last five digits can be displayed electronically. This rule applies not only to receipts given to customers but also to any copies kept by the business, with an exception for receipts where the card number is recorded by handwriting or by an imprint of the card itself. The bill expands existing protections for credit cards to include debit cards and establishes a civil penalty of up to $1,000 for violations, which will be enforced through a legal process for collecting penalties.
