This bill requires the Tennessee Department of Education to recommend and the State Board of Education to adopt academic standards for a year-long civics education course for 8th grade students, which must be available for implementation starting in the 2024-2025 school year. Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and public charter schools serving 8th grade students must then implement this year-long civics education course starting in the 2025-2026 school year. The course must cover the three branches of government, fundamental documents that underpin the U.S. and Tennessee governments, how laws are enacted, and how citizens shape and influence government.
