This bill requires the Department of Health, in collaboration with other state agencies and organizations, to conduct a study on indoor air quality in a representative sample of public schools across New Jersey, considering various regions, educational levels, and building ages. The study will identify common indoor air contaminants, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), and estimate their presence and levels in public schools statewide. Based on these findings, the Department of Health will develop and publish a list of the most common indoor air contaminants found in schools and provide guidance documents to help schools and school districts reduce or mitigate the effects of these contaminants, incorporating existing recommendations from the Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Both the list and guidance documents will be made publicly available on the websites of the Departments of Health and Education.
