Bill Summary

Under current law, a person cannot be appointed to serve as a challenger in an election district unless that person is a registered voter in the county in which the election district is located. This bill would allow a person to be appointed to serve as a challenger in any election district located within a congressional or legislative district where the person resides. Under the bill, in the case of a congressional or legislative district, a person who is a registered voter in any county or part thereof located within the congressional or legislative district may be appointed as a challenger in any election district in any county or part thereof located within the congressional or legislative district.

AI Summary

This bill modifies the rules for appointing election challengers, who are individuals authorized to observe and question voters at polling places to ensure election integrity. Currently, a challenger must be a registered voter in the same county where they are appointed to serve. However, this bill expands that eligibility, allowing a person to be appointed as a challenger in any election district within a congressional or legislative district if they are a registered voter in any part of that larger congressional or legislative district, regardless of which county within that district they reside in. This change aims to provide more flexibility in appointing qualified challengers across broader electoral areas.
