This bill provides that beginning in the 2023-2024 school year, each board of education must provide a United States civics course for all 11th grade students. The course must prepare students to become effective citizens, voters, and members of their communities. The course must include content on the fundamental principles and processes of democracy, and the governments of the United States, New Jersey, and counties and municipalities located in the State. The bill also provides that beginning with the 2023-2024 grade 11 class, the State Board of Education must require that the local graduation requirements adopted by a board of education include one course in United States civics, as developed pursuant to the bill's provisions.
