Bill Summary

Over one million women and hundreds of thousands of men experience some form of domestic violence by a partner or family member every year in the United States. According to the 2017 statistical report prepared by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts, more than 40,000 domestic violence complaints were made in 2017 in the State of New Jersey. Domestic violence is a serious problem affecting people of all ages as well as racial, ethnic, gender, economic, and religious backgrounds. The devastating effects of domestic violence include physical injury, psychological trauma, or in some cases even death. Domestic violence has both an immediate and long-term negative impact on the health of the victims and studies have shown a link between domestic violence and a myriad of health problems, including: smoking, diabetes, obesity, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Emotional and physical consequences of continued abuse can be severe and greater awareness may help prevent domestic violence in our communities and confirm our commitment to the protection of those who are most vulnerable.

AI Summary

This joint resolution designates October of each year as "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" in New Jersey, highlighting the serious and widespread nature of domestic violence in the United States. The resolution emphasizes that over one million women and hundreds of thousands of men experience domestic violence annually, with more than 40,000 complaints filed in New Jersey in 2017 alone. It details the devastating impacts of domestic violence, including physical injury, psychological trauma, and potential death, and notes that women are disproportionately affected, with one in four experiencing domestic violence in their lifetime. The resolution underscores the broader societal implications, such as significant economic costs, workplace disruptions, and long-term health consequences including mental health issues like anxiety and depression, and physical health problems such as substance abuse and obesity. By designating this awareness month, the resolution aims to bring public attention to domestic violence, increase understanding of its effects, and reaffirm the state's commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals. The resolution also requests that the Governor issue an annual proclamation encouraging public officials and citizens to participate in appropriate activities and programs during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
