This bill allows public school students to wear one item or object of cultural significance with or attached to their gown at high school commencement and other official graduation ceremonies and events. It recognizes that graduation is a significant milestone and that allowing students to express their cultural heritage can bring parity to all cultural groups. The bill applies to charter schools and state-tribal education compact schools, but it does not limit a school district's authority to prohibit an item that is likely to cause a substantial disruption or material interference with the ceremony or event.
