This bill amends the existing law in Virginia to require drug manufacturers to implement provisions for the return of drugs past their expiration date by pharmacies in order for their products to be eligible for dispensing as a therapeutically equivalent drug. The bill allows pharmacists to dispense a therapeutically equivalent drug product for a prescription that is written for a brand-name drug product, unless the prescriber specifies that the brand-name drug is medically necessary or the patient insists on the brand-name drug. The bill also requires the pharmacist to provide certain information to the purchaser when a therapeutically equivalent drug product is dispensed.
