This bill amends Chapter 32 of the General Laws to provide survivor benefits for the spouses of retired state troopers. Specifically, if a former member of the state police's uniformed division who has retired dies and leaves a spouse to whom they were married for at least one year and with whom they were living at the time of their death (or from whom they were living apart for a justifiable cause), the surviving spouse will receive a lifetime monthly allowance equal to what they would have received if the deceased member had elected a specific retirement option (option (c) of subdivision (2) of section 12) and named their spouse as the sole beneficiary. The retirement board will withhold a certain amount from the surviving spouse's payments during the first year to account for the difference between the option the deceased member elected and the option (c) they would have elected.
