This bill prohibits the distribution of "deceptive and fraudulent deepfakes" - synthetic media that falsely depicts a candidate for office or political party - within 90 days of an election, unless the media includes a clear disclosure stating that it has been manipulated. The bill provides exceptions for certain news coverage and parody. It allows candidates depicted in such deepfakes to seek injunctive relief or damages, and authorizes the court to award legal fees to a prevailing party. The bill is set to take effect on November 1, 2024.
