This bill creates the offense of organized retail theft, which is when a person acts in concert with others to steal merchandise from retailers with the intent to sell, exchange, or dispose of the merchandise for value. It also establishes an organized retail theft task force under the Department of the Attorney General to address this issue. The bill provides penalties for organized retail theft, with a Class C felony if the value of the stolen merchandise is $200 or more but less than $750, and a Class B felony if the value is $750 or more. The penalties are increased if the person recruits, coordinates, organizes, supervises, directs, manages, or finances others to engage in organized retail theft.
