AN ACT To amend Part 2 of Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to competencies and core curriculum under the "Quality Basic Education Act," so as to provide that, beginning in the 2030-2031 school year, a computer science course shall be a high school graduation requirement; to provide for certain computer science courses to be substituted for units of credit graduation requirements in certain other subject areas; to require that such course shall not include virtual or remote instruction, subject to an exception; to provide for such exception; to revise legislative findings; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill amends the "Quality Basic Education Act" to require that, starting in the 2030-2031 school year, all high school students in Georgia must complete a full-credit course in computer science or a full-credit career, technical, and agricultural education (CTAE) course that includes computer science content as a requirement for high school graduation. The bill also allows students to use a computer science course to satisfy one unit of credit in math, science, CTAE, or elective requirements, and allows CTAE courses with embedded computer science content to satisfy the graduation requirement. The bill also requires the Georgia Department of Education to ensure that the Georgia Virtual School has sufficient capacity to enable schools to use computer science courses to meet the new requirement, and provides for grants to train teachers in computer science.
