This joint resolution designates the first full week of May each year as "Wounded Warrior Appreciation Week" in New Jersey, recognizing the significant physical and mental sacrifices made by military service members during conflicts like Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The resolution highlights that advancements in battlefield medicine have enabled more service members to survive severe injuries, with over 48,000 servicemen and women physically wounded and an estimated 400,000 experiencing invisible wounds such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depression, and combat-related stress, along with 320,000 who may have suffered traumatic brain injuries. The primary purpose of the resolution is to raise public awareness about wounded veterans' unique challenges and courage, and to encourage their successful reintegration into civilian life. Additionally, the resolution respectfully requests that the Governor issue a proclamation calling on public officials and citizens to observe the week with appropriate activities and programs that honor and support wounded warriors in their ongoing personal and professional journeys.
