This bill mandates that health insurance carriers in New Jersey, including various types of insurance companies, health maintenance organizations, and entities administering state employee health plans and the Medicaid Program, must cover certain obesity treatments. These covered treatments include preventive care, nutrition counseling, behavioral therapy, bariatric surgery, and "anti-obesity medication," which is defined as any medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for chronic weight management in individuals with obesity. The bill specifies that these benefits must be provided to the same extent as for any other medical condition and applies to various types of insurance contracts and policies, including those for hospital service corporations, medical service corporations, health service corporations, individual and group policies, and enrollee agreements with health maintenance organizations, as well as contracts purchased by the State Health Benefits Commission and the School Employees' Health Benefits Commission. Additionally, it amends the Medicaid program to include coverage for these obesity treatments, provided there is federal financial participation available.
