This bill requires each local school board and governing body of a public charter school to provide a free breakfast and lunch to each student enrolled in their schools. The state will reimburse the local education agencies (LEAs) and public charter schools for the cost of providing these free meals after all available federal funds have been applied. The bill also makes some changes to the existing law regarding school meal programs. The bill is not an appropriation of funds, and the provisions will only take effect if the necessary funds are appropriated by the general appropriations act. The bill will apply starting in the 2024-2025 school year.
