This bill amends Alabama's criminal procedure statute to authorize a "split sentence" for defendants convicted of Class A, B, or C felonies who receive a sentence of 30 years or less. Under the amended law, the judge can order the defendant to be confined for a portion of the sentence, with the remainder suspended and the defendant placed on probation. The bill expands this split sentence provision to cover sentences up to 30 years, up from the previous cap of 20 years. The bill also makes technical changes to existing language. The amendments will take effect on October 1, 2024.
