This bill amends existing law to require school districts to provide free meals to students eligible for free meals through the National School Lunch Program or the School Breakfast Program. For students eligible for reduced-price meals through those federal programs, the bill allows school districts to impose only the reduced-price charges permitted under the federal programs. Additionally, the bill allows school districts to provide reduced-price meals to students with family incomes less than 209% of the federal poverty line, and requires the state Department of Education to reimburse school districts for the costs of providing those reduced-price meals.
