This bill requires local educational agencies (LEAs) or public charter schools in Tennessee to install, maintain, and use video camera surveillance systems in special education classrooms upon parental request and approval. The video cameras would continuously monitor students, teachers, and staff in these classrooms while special education or related services are provided. The bill also establishes guidelines for storing and viewing the footage, and requires local boards of education and public charter school governing bodies to adopt policies to implement this new requirement. The bill takes effect upon becoming law for policy development purposes, and on July 1, 2024, for all other purposes, applying to the 2024-2025 school year and each school year thereafter.
