Bill Summary

Expanding to every roadway in the State the requirement that the driver of a vehicle traveling slower than the general speed of traffic drive the vehicle in the right-hand lanes if practicable as determined by the driver; and providing that, on a roadway that has three or more lanes for traffic moving in the same direction with a posted maximum speed limit of 55 miles per hour or more, the far left lane may be used only for overtaking and passing another vehicle in a certain manner and under certain circumstances.

AI Summary

This bill expands a requirement that drivers traveling slower than the general speed of traffic must use the right-hand lane, if practicable, to apply on every roadway in the state, rather than just on interstate highways in rural areas as previously required. Additionally, the bill stipulates that on roadways with three or more lanes moving in the same direction with a speed limit of 55 mph or more, the far left lane may only be used for overtaking and passing another vehicle, and the driver must return to the right lane as soon as it is safe to do so. This provision does not apply in certain circumstances, such as when preparing for a left turn or exit, or when using a high-occupancy vehicle lane. Violations of the left lane usage rule are subject to fines.
