This bill amends New Jersey state law to permit certain motor vehicles involved in ice and snow removal to display both amber and green warning lights under specific circumstances. Currently, vehicles are restricted in the types of warning lights they can use, but this legislation allows state-owned, bi-state/interstate governmental agency, local government, or Department of Transportation-contracted vehicles to display green lights when they are engaged in operations that present a vehicular traffic hazard. The green lights can only be used in conjunction with the already authorized amber warning lights, and they are meant to alert other drivers to exercise unusual care when approaching, overtaking, or passing these vehicles during snow and ice removal operations. The bill also updates references from the "Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles" to the "Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission" and makes corresponding changes to the state vehicle lighting regulations to accommodate these new green warning lights. The changes are intended to improve safety by providing additional visual warning to drivers when snow and ice removal vehicles are working on roadways.
