This bill removes the condition that the Department of Transportation must first authorize the installation of surveillance cameras on interstates and state highways before law enforcement agencies can operate such cameras. Instead, it authorizes law enforcement agencies to operate surveillance cameras on these highways under certain circumstances, as long as they are not used to enforce or monitor traffic violations. The bill also specifies that the use of these cameras must be consistent with the continued use, operations, maintenance, and safety of the highway facility and must not interfere with the free and safe flow of traffic. The bill takes effect on July 1, 2024.
