This bill, known as the Porch Piracy Act of 2024, prohibits the theft of mail or packages from their intended recipients. It defines "mail or package" as an item delivered or left for collection by the United States Postal Service or a delivery service company. The bill makes it a felony for a person to knowingly or willfully, without the permission of the intended recipient, obtain or exert control over mail or a package with the intent to deprive the owner of the item. Violators of this law can be subject to up to 5 years of imprisonment. The bill is set to take effect on October 1, 2024.
